One little spark who reminded us why this work matters.

At TREE Innovative Foundation, we meet many children as we help build self-reliant communities across rural India. Every now and then, one of them reminds us exactly why we do what we do. This month, that spark is Ovhi, Shejul tai’s daughter.From the moment she arrived, Ovhi carried a bright, restless energy the natural spirit of a child ready to do something. What made her stand out was where she chose to spend it: entirely in the real world in front of her, never on a glowing screen.She sat down and ate her meal all on her own confident and independent, opening her little steel tiffin and enjoying every bite. Then she settled with her notebook and lost herself in drawing and writing, her pen moving with care, her eyes fixed on the page, completely absorbed in the simple joy of creating.

And when it was time to be with others, she looked up, smiled and connected talking, laughing and learning from the people around her. Not once did she trouble her mother. She simply lived her day, fully and freely.

In an age where screens reach for a child’s attention before a pencil ever can, Ovhi spent the entire day with zero mobile phone use. She chose crayons over swipes, conversation over scrolling, and her own imagination over autoplay never once needing a device to keep her happy.That is the whole difference: energy scattered on a screen, or energy invested in real life in creativity, in curiosity, in human connection. Ovhi showed us that a child doesn’t need less spirit; she needs the right place to spend it. And that is exactly the kind of childhood our work sets out to protect.
